Phones Off and Away Program

The NSW Government introduced restrictions on the use of mobile phones in NSW high schools at the beginning of Term 4, 2023. The system has led to increased focus in classrooms, removal of distractions and has also promoted positive social interaction, while also reducing the potential for online bullying.

Important information for Term Two

Like any implementation strategy there is the need to refine processes and procedures. Therefore, we would like to communicate with you some changes that will occur from the start of Term 2, 2025. The new mobile devices management plan at Brisbane Water Secondary College, Umina Campus will apply to mobile phones and will occur during all school hours, including break times such as during lunch and recess, as well as while students are on school-based excursions.

To reiterate our processes, we have a combined approach in place. We use mobile phone pouches as well as the addition of the option of mobile phones being off and away.

Students will still be able to carry their phones while travelling to and from school.

What does this mean?

This will mean that as of Day One Term Two, students will either need to have their phones locked away in pouches or they will need to have them turned off and put away in their school bags. They are not to be carrying them in their pockets, and they are not to remove them from their bags at any stage during the day.

Students will be unable to use their mobile phones to buy food from the canteen. They can purchase from the canteen using cash or card, alternatively orders can be completed using the FlexiSchools app.

There are consequences in place to deal with students who do not comply with the process, as follows:

• Students who have their phone out or use it at any time will be asked to take the phone to the front office where it will be stored until it can be collected by a parent or carer.

• The discipline policy will come into effect for repeat breaches of the rules.

We are committed to the continuation of our school being a mobile phone-free space to improve learning and engagement. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school directly on 4341 9066. There will also be further information posted on school communication platforms.
