TARGETED PROGRAM INFORMATION
We have a number of programs on offer at BWSC Umina. Every student will be involved in one of the programs we run, be it Enrichment, AVID, Targeted Sport, Creative Arts or CLASS. We also cater for students who need a little extra support by placing them in slightly smaller mainstream classes.
Enrichment
This program is accessed through a test and application form. It is for students who are very strong academically and who enjoy big picture projects. The expectation is for students to spend time involved in Project Based Learning where they work on school based, local community, national and global issues.
AVID
AVID students work collaboratively and are required to speak up in class. Students attend tutorials once a week with tutors from University in order to obtain skills in solving problems without direct teacher input. Literacy and Numeracy need to be strong and the program is gained through application and interview.
Strive
This is a program for students who benefit from being in a smaller class due to needing additional assistance with learning for academic or social reasons. Students will generally have access to a Student Learning Support Officer as well as their classroom teacher. Selection for this program is based on primary school recommendation.
CLASS
Collaborative, Listening and Speaking Skills. This is an AVID spin off program run exclusively at BWSC Umina. Students use the AVID principles to work on collaborating and solving problems together. The program is based around 21st Century soft skills.
CAPA
There are four categories for the CAPA program. Dance, Drama, Music and Art. CAPA hopefuls need to complete an application and an audition or presentation of portfolio. Students spend two hours a week involved in improving their discipline.
Targeted Sport
This program is for the talented sports people who enjoy project based learning and are able to work on specific skills and sport based activities in lessons. Students will be involved in enrichment tasks during sport and PE. Students need to be involved in Sport at a high level and access to the program is via application form and interview.
